Ep 376 – Rivermouth

Rivermouth:

Live at The Bearded Lady, West End, 8 February 2020

Rivermouth are a four-piece Brisbane band incorporating elements of hip-hop, jazz and funk. Formed in 2011, they are made up of MC Jonathan Sri, keyboard player Geoff Wong, bassist Caroline Townsend and drummer Andrew Carter. With a background in spoken-word poetry, Sri raps lyrics that are mostly political in nature over Townsend’s fretless bass grooves and Wong’s tinkling piano. Songs incorporate themes such as colonialism, capitalism, gentrification and prejudice.

In 2016 Sri was elected to the Brisbane City Council, representing the inner-city Gabba Ward, and was subsequently re-elected in 2020. Rivermouth released their first EP, “Etchings and Scratchings”, in 2013, and their album “Subtropical Metropolis?” in 2021, with a few singles in between.

Includes an interview with Jonathan Sri.
