Hoodoo Gurus (who are often referred to as the Gurus by fans) are a 4-piece Australian band who are deemed as legends of their time. Reaching iconic status in 2007 when inducted into the ARIA Hall Of Fame, the Gurus were acknowledged as being one of the most inventive, lyrically smart and exciting bands of their time. The style is an eclectic fusion of 60s power pop, wild garage punk, hard rock and psychedelic kitsch, and this crazy combo is what helps to cement their iconic, unique style.
Hailing from Sydney, they formed in 1981, fronted by legend Dave Faulkner, (songwriter, lead singer and guitarist) and have since seen many changes to their lineup, however have never travelled far from their roots. Current members include Brad Shepherd, Nik Reith and Richard Grossman. The Gurus have a stash of critically acclaimed singles under their belt, such as My Girl, Come Anytime, and Miss Freelove 69, but their biggest hit single, What’s My Scene, which was later modified to be ‘What’s My Team’ , which became the NRL’s year 2000 theme song.
A lengthy hiatus followed their early success, and the band reformed following the success of ‘What’s My Team’ , with the publicity rejuvenating their career, opening them up to opportunities such as playing at the 2006 NRL Grand Final, 2007 SXSW, Splendour In The Grass and the Meredith Music Festival. The Hoodoo Gurus have still got it, and will forever remain as classic Aussie icons.
Back when 4ZZZ started in 1976, a group of volunteers at the station led by John Stanwell started curating shows around Brisbane called the ‘Joint Effort’. Hoodoo Gurus played one of the Joint Effort’s back in the mid-80’s and when plans were underway for organising a Joint Effort show to celebrate 4ZZZ’s 40th Birthday, the Gurus were at the top of the list to invite back to headline the show.
