Episode 77: Matmos

Matmos-large

Matmos
Recorded by Harvey O’Sullivan and Hugh Fasher.
Mixed by Harvey O’Sullivan.
Mastered by Andrew Edgson.
Recorded at The Sydney Recital Hall, January 15 2014.

Their discography is too expansive to summarise in mere words. They’ve been involved with a plethora of small independent labels as well as bigger brothers like Matador and Thrill Jockey and worked with the enormously successful, Bjork, since the early 2000s. They’ve stood on the edge of cultural recognition without compromising their art or their own joyfully twisted aims.

Performing at a prestigious event like Sydney festival doesn’t happen every day for Matmos, who are more often than not playing in small bars to somewhat interested patrons. Their words, not mine. Reviews of the performance at the Sydney Recital Hall have been mixed to say the least. In fact, it’s probably safe to say that they confused most of their audience.

For this performance they welcomed to the stage Andrew Tuttle, a Brisbane based sound artist with an electric sense of humour. In the opening song you’ll hear him counting down from 15 to zero, humming some tunes and describing some big green triangles.
