Episode 85: Turnpike; Scul Hazzards

Turnpike

Turnpike
Recorded by SLAM Sound.

Recorded at Sonic Masala Festival, Brisbane. June 21st 2014.

Turnpike have been around for a good long while, releasing a few CDs and 7”s here and there. They’re better known as a live band, having played probably close to a hundred or so shows in Brisbane, the kind of band you see name-dropped in interviews rather than writ in large type. Tim Brennan of TYM’s guitars says of the band, “Turnpike are, and will always be one the best bands you’ve probably never heard of and probably one of the best bands to ever come out of Brisbane … They are impossible to be a fan of as you can’t buy any of their music and they rarely play live, you can’t even get a T shirt.” That said, not long after this performance they finally finished making their latest record.

Scul Hazzards
Recorded by SLAM Sound.
Mixed by Cam Smith.
Recorded at Sonic Masala Festival, Brisbane. June 21st 2014.

Scul Hazzards originated from Brisbane in the mid-2000s and after quickly churning out a couple of full-length LPs decided to relocate to London in 2008. They returned to Australia a couple of years later, this time settling in Melbourne. After touring the country upon their return they’ve been relatively quiet up until just recently. This year saw the band returning to the stage more often with shows in Melbourne, Sydney and of course Brisbane. It still remains to be seen if they’ll follow-up their 2009 and record ‘Landlord’, but never lose hope.
