Hailing from Queensland’s cultural house of mirrors, The Gold Coast, White Lodge have covered a lot of ground in a short amount of time. Only forming in 2013 they’ve already had a 7” split record with Taiwan’s Forests. They take a leaf from the books of recently acclaimed acts like Yuck, Ty Segall and White Lung. Meanwhile, they’ve been lessening the wait between their Brisbane shows. It’s hard for a young band like White Lodge to get a break on The Gold Coast. A lack of venues willing to give new alternative bands a go makes the metropolis of Brisbane seem like a cultural safe-haven.

Howling Seas

Howling Seas are three 16-year-old gentlemen, who used to play under the moniker of ‘Gravity Scam’. Now, in beautiful, sunny 2014, they have a self-titled debut album out on CD that has received high praise from both JJJ and Tonedeaf. They’re doing quite well for a group so young; |||their music show a maturity beyond their years. Obviously, they’re hip to a lot of fresh sounds happening around Brisbane and further afar. Among their influences they list Roku Music, The keep On Dancin’s, The Kramers and Violent Soho. They play some catchy noise-y pop songs but they ain’t too rough around the edges. In fact, their music is reminiscent of early 2000s alternative rock acts like Purplene and Gaslight Radio.
