Gerald Keaney and The Gearlad Keaneys is the band of Brisbane philosopher and social activist Dr. Gerald Keaney. They play what could possibly only be referred to as ‘deconstructed pop music’ – which I know doesn’t have the same ring as ‘Grunge’ or ‘trip hop’. Partly sarcastic, mostly satirical, they have an ‘Abbreviated Pop Song’ as well as another ‘Song of Songs’, a witty one about the every-growing concern in the music industry about having too many songs. Sort of, not really but we can agree that Gerald Keaney and The Gerald Keaneys are anti-capitalism without having to resort to Beatles covers or ‘Free Hug’ placards.

They’ve been making music under that name since 2009, and all the members are heavily involved in other bands and creative pursuits. Recently they released the first single and accompanying music video from their upcoming album, which is set for release mid year through Sonic Masala. Pedestal Fan is short and sweet, it’s a bit punk without being too rough. To me, it’s got that in common with the best Aussie rock from the 90s and we all know that we do it better than the yanks anyway.
